$1 Billion in Taxes

It’s been reported that Facebook founder owes the IRS a cool $1 billion. Which goes to show you that if Dr. Evil wanted the everyone to pay him $1 billion dollars he should have gotten a job with the government and simply tax the people.

So what can Dr. Evil, I mean the government, do with $1 billion nowadays? The Afghan war is costing the American tax payers $300 million a day, so Mark Zuckerberg can foot the fill for a little over three days himself.

To deploy a single soldier in Afghanistan, it is reported as costing somewhere between $850,000 to $1,200,000 a year. Mark Zuckerberg’s tax bill can support about 1,000 soldiers in the field for a whole year.

The Complete Cost of the Iraq War

I used to work with this guy that had previously worked with military contractors and who has high ranking navy officers as family members. My former colleague would say that the United States government did not stop paying Civil War benefits until somewhere in the 1970’s or 1980’s. Think about that for a second when you think about the two million plus soldiers and military personnel that were deployed in the war in Iraq.

Early in the Iraq War, it was originally estimated to cost somewhere between $50 to $80 billion. Now analysts are project the total direct cost of Iraq War is north of $800 billion and that the American public will be paying upwards of $4 trillion for decades to come in indirect costs such as health benefits to war veterans.

From an article on Market Watch on the cost of the Iraq War….

Caring for veterans, more than 2 million of them, could alone reach $1 trillion, according to Paul Rieckhoff, executive director of the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, in Congressional testimony in July.

Welcome to World War III

Do not be fooled, there is no such thing as an Arab Spring. The popular uprising that sprang across the Arab world was not an organic movement, it was a covert operation intelligence-lead movement. There was a time that the US government backed military juntas, coup detats, even political assassinations by arming, bribing, and influencing key generals and would be dictators by any means necessary. Since 9/11 there has been a three prong approach to the Middle East. The first prong has been direct military intervention in Iraq and Afghanistan. The second has been a covert movement to stir the populace to overthrown their governments, such as was the case in Libya, Egypt, Tunisia, Yemen, and soon well see in Syria, and Iran. The last approach has been the 1984-style fear mongering and network news propaganda by the government. Whether you like it or not, this is World War III: The Arab Spring.

As far as most Americans understand, the United States is only involved in two distinct and indirect war theaters, Iraq and Afghanistan. But reality is that there is that the United States is involved in a World Wide War with overt and covert operations in counties such as Syria, Libya, Somalia, Pakistan, Iran, just to name the obvious ones. The United States has been involved in air strikes, drone attacks, extraction missions, commando raids, etc. in pretty much the whole region for the past ten years. This is, by far, our longest war in history. My biggest fear is that when we finish water boarding and droning tribal leaders in other countries where a man’s wealth is measured in goats these same tools and tactics will be used on student leaders here at home were we have no goats and wealth.

The sun never sets on American military institutions, forward operating bases, and rotational deployment centers.

Pride and Prejudice

While Obama was delivering his speech at the British Parliament in the United Kingdom, I stumble upon these overly apologetic and hubris tweets by LeVar Burton, better known as the blind guy in Star Trek The Next Generation.

  • I am SO proud of my President in this moment!!! #statesman #worldleader #blackman
  • Historic speech before both Houses of Commons in UK… and he’s killin’ it! RT @macguyinnc Could you clarify as to why?
  • For those who have questioned my comment… I am proud not only because Obama is a black man, but because I am too!!!

As a Buddhist and a scholar, and I know that such hubris, attachment, and blind allegiance to someone based on color, religion, ethnicity has been at the heart of genocide, war, and discrimination. My natural response to blind partisanship is satire and so I tweeted the following.

  • @levarburton I thought you were proud because you are Obama’s mom.
  • @levarburton are you also proud of African despots, dictators, and tyrants?
  • @levarburton I am proud not only because Obama is a rich elitist working for corporate America, but because I am too!!!

Now interestingly enough, the comments made by LeVar Burton came less than a week of an interview on 60 Minutes with Al Sharpton who said outright that he and his National Action Network are not critical of President Obama, as he has been with ever other president, because of color of the President.

I don’t judge the President by the color of his skin but by whether or not he has keep his campaign promises. President Obama promised to get our troops out of Iraq, to close down Gitmo, and fix the broken economy and yet we still have troops in Iraq, prisoners in Gitmo, and Goldman Sachs running Wall Street.

The Disinformation War in the Media

I’ve lost all faith in the media. On one side they don’t actually do much journalism anymore, they are cowed into not reporting information that has not been deemed ‘declassified’ so they are left reporting press releases and Facebook status updates and they are always ready to take credit when they ‘investigate’ a lead on Twitter. Andy Carvin, the senior strategist at NPR, recently ‘debunked sloppy reporting’ about possible Israeli-made weapons in the civil war in Libya. Oh, by the way, it’s a full scale civil war. It’s not a protest, uprising, opposition, rebellion, it’s a full scale civil war that is functioning as a proxy war between regional super powers but you won’t hear about that in the news either.

An image surfaced in Facebook of a mortar shell used by Ghaddafi forces on the rebels with a insignia that to me immediately looked as a ‘star of david dangling from a parachute.’ I don’t read Arabic, but it seems that those that posted the image are claiming this to be irrefutable proof that the Libyan government are using Israeli munitions on its people. Andy Carvin took it amongst himself to prove this wrong using his journalism degree by just reposting the link on his Twitter account. LOL. This is is journalism in the age of social media, putting up your twitter account and reposting links. You can read the timeline of how Andy Carvin unearthed the fact that the shell is “most likely British made” and the graphic is probably an iconography describing the purpose of the shell. The icon of what seems like the star of David depicts indicates that it’s a flare.

Mortar Shell in Libya

Mortar Shell in Libya

If you look closely at the image in question, you can deduce the function of the shell from the label and icons on the shell. It reads “81 mm M ILLUM PARA L 20A L2Y.” The shell even includes the lot number. Anyone with common sense can know that this image doesn’t necessary mean that Israeli is backing or has backed the Libyan government.

Even thought this seems like common sense, it’s apparently not common sense for journalists like Andy Carvin who is taking credit of his ‘findings’ and social media mad hatter skills of Twitter, Google, and Facebook to ‘debunked sloppy reporting’. What is sad, is that he doesn’t dig deeper than these shallow findings. For one, from the ‘intelligence chatter’ that I am picking up, a great many of the rebel fighters think they are rebelling against their government because they have been told that it’s backed by Israel. The propaganda of this image in pro-Arab Facebook groups and Andy Carvin’s investigated journalism seems to confirm this. Someone is telling the rebel fighters that Israel is involved. The question is who is feeding this anti-Israel and anti-Ghaddafi propaganda to the rebels? Andy Carvin should also following up on why we are actively involved in Libya’s civil war but do very little to prevent the massacres taking place in the Ivory Coast.
