The London 2012 Olympics of Shenanigans, Scandals, and Shame

The London 2012 Olympics Games have had more than its share of shenanigans and scandals. The London 2012 Olympic Games started off with a horrible Opening Ceremony which featured giant smoke pipes and dancing bankers in top hats and it hasn’t had many great moments since.

Olympic Pyramid of Providence

Olympic Pyramid of Profits and Providence

Voula Papachristou
Even before the Olympic Games got started, the Olympic Committee’s secret police was in full force monitoring social media of all the competing Olympians. The first Olympian to be removed from the Olympic Games was the Greek triple number Voula Papachristou for repeating a bad and tasteless joke on her twitter account. It has been reported that she also retweet posts from a controversial right wing Geek politician in addition to a tasteless and racist joke that has been translated as “With so many Africans in Greece … at least the West Nile mosquitos will eat homemade food!!!,” More telling that her joke, which I find immature for a 23 year old, is the Geek Olympic Committee’s decision to remove her from competing in the Olympics.

Twitter User Arrested
Greek Olympians where not the only ones on Twitter making tasteless jokes, a a 17 year old from Dorset, England has been arrested for tweeting offensive remarks. The tweet in question was the following, “i’m going to find you and i’m going to drown you in the pool you cocky twat your a nobody people like you make me sick.” By all measures this is an idle and harmless threat. Trash talking has been an integral part of competitions since the first olympic games but now it’s illegal.

NBC Suspends Journalists Twitter Account
Twitter was the center of another olympic size scandal when it suspended the account of Guy Adams, and independent journalist, after he had tweeted a complaint about NBC broadcast of the games. Tweet in question reads as follows, “The man responsible for NBC pretending the Olympics haven’t started yet is Gary Zenkel. Tell him what u think! Email:” As of right now, Guy Adams has under 20k followers, which means only about three emails might have been sent because of the tweet but that was enough for NBC to complain and have the account suspended. NBC retracted the complaint and the Twitter account was restored.

Olympian Booted For Spending Time with Family
St. Kitts and Nevis sprinter Kim Collins was expelled from the London 2012 Olympic Games, not for tweeting offensive remarks, but for spending time with his wife. It seems that the St. Kitts and Nevis Olympic Committee forced him out for not staying at the Olympic Village and instead staying with his wife. It is reported that Kim Collins posted the following message on his Facebook page, “Hours before my 5th 100m olympic race, i now find out i cant run,all because i was in a hotel with my wife/coach. S.K.N.O.C REALLY? Are you freakig kiddin me!!!!!!!!”

Australian Boxer Faces Sanctions
It has been widely reported that even spectators can’t wear their own clothes if they don’t have the official corporate logos of the Olympic sponsors. Well, Olympians seem to have more stringent dress code. Australian boxer Damien Hooper is in hot water with the Australian Olympic Committee for wearing a t-shirt with the Australian aboriginal flag on it prior a fight. It appears that the Australian Olympic Committee is not aware that the aboriginal flag has been appointed as an official flag of Australia.

Badminton Match Fixing
I haven’t seen any news on NBC regarding the the badminton match fixing but other news agencies are reporting that eight Olympians have been disqualified for match fixing. Chinese and South Korean teams were purposefully loosing to take advantage of loopholes in the teams are grouped and ranked.

Saddest Story of the Olympics
The gold medal for the saddest story of the London 2012 Olympic Games goes to Shin Lam of South Korea. All the South Korean fencer needed to do to move on to a gold medal match was not to be touched for one second. Unfortunately for Shin, the clock never started after the referred signaled the match to restart. Because of this error with the timekeeper, she lost the match. She remained in the playing surface to content the decision, but eventually was removed by security.

Isles of Wonder London 2012 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony

Did the London 2012 Olympic Games start with what seems a headstone? The American broadcast of the London 2012 Olympic Games began with a video montage whose first frame was that gravestone with the words Isles of Wonder.

The opening scene in the stadium looked like a country side village gathering to play a game of cricket. Video of children’s choirs from the occupied territories of Northern Ireland, subjugated Scotland, police state Wales, and England sang fragments of songs relevant to their perspective countries. Few minutes in, and I’m already bored.

It looks like the London 2012 Olympic Games will involve a lot of people dressed in outdated old Victorian outfits speakth in ye old English Shakespearian verses.

All of a sudden, to represent the Industrial Revolution, a lot of homeless looking people come out of the trees and guys in top hats start striking a vogue. I think somewhere in this era the English were involved in the slave trade. Smoke stacks emerge out of the ground and start polluting the stadium. All along some bangara drugs where playing with some eurotrash synthesized melody in the background.

All of a sudden a juxtaposed carnival of English stereotypes and cliches emerged, old guys in red coats classed with an army of Sargent Peppers. Wow, it is true that the English have bad teeth, and bad facial hair.

Pompous music plays to a video of Mr. Bond walking into Buckingham Palace to pay the Queen a visit, I guess the old bat also likes her martini shaken and not stirred. A fake Queen Elizabeth jumps out of a helicopter with a parachute, seconds later the real Queen descends down into her sky box to greet her slavish subjects.

I have to be honest, the London 2012 Opening Ceremony totally lost between them celebrating their socialist health care and the giant 100 foot figure of Voldemort. I’m afraid it didn’t get much better after that.

The London 2012 Opening Ceremony definitely left out the part it where the Britain was conquered by the Romans, Normans, and the Vikings. The Opening Ceremony also had a large omission, it had nothing about the Black Plague.

The Meaning of Olympic Rings

The symbol of the Olympic Games is the Olympic rings. The Olympic rings is composed of five interlocking rings. Each ring is colored a different color and it symbolizes a different part of the world. The rings was originally designed by Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the father of the modern Olympic Games. In 1912, de Coubertin described the design of the Olympic rings as such…

The emblem chosen to illustrate and represent the world Congress of 1914…: five intertwined rings in different colours – blue, yellow, black, green, and red – are placed on the white field of the paper. These five rings represent the five parts of the world which now are won over to Olympism and willing to accept healthy competition. Blue stands for Europe, black for Africa, Red for America, Yellow for Asia and, green for Oceania.
