Male Pattern Stress

According to Wikipedia, the average life expectancy for American men is 75 compared to 80 for women. On average, men die up to five years earlier than women and I would say that the reason for that difference is women. It’s very stressful to be a man in our society, to be the bread winner, the head of household, the provider and decider. In addition to providing financially for the family, men have to provide security, and moral support which includes going shopping with the wife and answering dangerous and difficult questions like “does this make me look fat?” What is often missed as the cause of the early demise of men is that women do put a lot of extra pressure on men.

Men are constantly juggling between pressure and stress at work and at home. If the family car develops an issues, the men have to take care of it. If the house springs a leak, the men have to address it. If the neighbor is too loud, the men have to resolve it with the neighbor. If the kids are having problems at school, the men have to handle it. If there are problems at work, the men have to deal with it.

If your partner is stress, she will let you know about it. If she is concerned, you are the first to hear about. If she doesn’t like something, you better not like it either. If she she reads all of TMZ to you, you better pay attention because there will be a quiz later. If she wants something done to the house, you better go to Home Depot. If she wants to keep up with the Joneses, you better refinance it.

All of this stress, burden, pressure, tension builds up in a man and it eventually crushes him physically. When I see a large or fat man out with his beautiful wife and family at a chain restaurant ordering a large medium rare piece of stake, I feel sorry for the guy and think to myself, “that guy is trying to kill himself… slowly, one meal at a time.”

The Happiness Paradox

As the human species, we have it the best than we ever had it. No matter where you are in the world, compare your self now to your ancestors just 100 years back. Most people today enjoy a fair amount of leisure time, we can travel quickly and easily, we have plenty of food, we have better shelter, we can rely on decent health care and modern medicine, and yet I would say that we are, collectively, less happy than our great-great-grandparents 100 years ago. You would think that we, as a people, should be happier than ever, but we aren’t. More than ever, people today are either subscribed or self-medicated with anti-depressants, uppers or downers, sleeping pills, pain medication, psychoactive and recreational drugs just to deal with everyday life. Why are we so unhappy and will our collective depression get worse?

The Boston Marathon Bombing and The Lockdown of Watertown

After a four day manhunt, the city of Boston is returning back to normal after the Boston Marathon bombing. As the people of Boston and its sounding area take a collective sigh of relief, politicians, pundits, and security experts will start to analyze the events leading to the Boston Marathon bombings as well as what we can learn from these events. So what can we, as a nation, learn from the Boston Marathon bombings?

The Incompetence of the DHS
There is no other way to say it other than the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has proven once again that is a ineffective at keeping Americans safe. The DHS is completely incompetent, inept, and inefficient. Given the DHS more money and powers won’t help either, it just magnifies how useless the department is. There were so many points of failure that the full report of this incident will rival the 9/11 report.

The Bureaucratic Bureau of Investigation
The FBI doesn’t normally release all of the information it has gather regarding an on going investigation. Police agencies often hold back information so as to not tip off the perpetrators. That said, the Boston Marathon bombing showed how bureaucratic the bureau of investigation is. I am surprised at how long it took for the FBI to identify and release information on the bombing suspects. Two bombs went off during the Boston Marathon on April 15, 2013 but it took over three days for the FBI to release video footage and grainy still images of the suspects. What the FBI finally released was grainy and difficult to make out, it took the sleuthing of online forums to dig up a high resolution image of the suspects at the crime scene.

Within an hour of the bombings, the FBI should have made a big push to collect every photo and video taken at the Boston Marathon minutes before and after the tragic event. Nowadays, everyone is carrying around smart phones with cameras and at events like the Boston Marathon there are hundreds of people taking hundreds of pictures from every which angle. The FBI should have made a bigger push to collect every photo taken by every person attending the race. Once a suspect can be identify, all you have to do is upload the images to iPhoto and have iPhoto’s facial recognition feature find every photo where the suspect is in and even create a nice timeline.

The Boston Marathon bombings have clearly revealed that the FBI is lagging in the technical ability to leverage technology and the intelligence of the crowd accordingly. The FBI’s most trusted technology for receiving information on crimes is the tip phone line.

Crowd Sourcing Intelligence and Ignorance
Soon after the bombings, social media sites like Reddit sprang into action, analyzing pictures and gathering information on potential suspects. Because the FBI had release so little information early on in the investigation, the online community took matters into their own hands came to their own conclusions… which proved mostly incorrect.

Even though Reddit and other online communities were often wrong when come up with conclusions, they there the go to source for real time information. Watching CNN or other network news stations was painfully difficult to do. Network news stations don’t do good journalism anymore, they just have idiotic talking heads making up conjectures and asking stupid questions. The Boston bombings make it evidently clear that the news networks approach to breaking news is broken. There is a huge need for a true real-time crowd-sourced federated news social media forum.

Network News Nonsense
The news networks are complete incompetent mumbling talentless idiots. The American news networks don’t show any real information, don’t report on real news, don’t do real journalism, and don’t ask intelligent questions. News network anchors are idiotic talking heads in front of a blue screen, they replay the same stock footage over and over, they bring on retired ‘experts’ that make unfounded conjectures, and often report on stale and inaccurate information.

No matter the crime scene, you have that idiot news reported talking to a friend of neighbor of the suspect. The reporter always asks the same dumb questions and the neighbors often say the same thing, “he was a nice quiet kid, all American kid, I never suspected anything like this from the suspects, he was a nice kid, as American as anyone, smokes a little weed here and there, he is an angel, he was compassionate, caring, jovial, forth coming, a lovely kid, he was not capable of this, outstanding athlete, never a trouble maker, joyful and caring kid, likable guy, had a million friends, I never suspected the suspect, he never had any problems with the police, loved animals and long walks on the beach.”

The United States of the Middle East
The United States just shifted a bit closer to the Middle East. Because of the myopic, callous, and illogical foreign policies of the United States in the Islamic world, which includes droning of innocent civilians. The United States, through its foreign policies, has poked and provoked, and possible opened Pandora’s box of terror. Roadside bombs, cafe bombs, improvised explosives, mortar attacks, drone double tap strikes, and rocket attacks is something that people in countries like Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Israel worry about every day. The DHS has proven that it cannot keep Americans safe. Because of the security theater we now live in, anytime two people gather in public, it will be seen as either a security threat or security target.

The War on Terror
The War on Terror is designed to have no final outcome, there won’t be a signed armistice, no peace treaty. So who is winning the War on Terror? If you keep score with body bags, then the United States is winning. If you keep score on what this war has done to the deficit and national debt, then the military-industrial-complex is winning.

The Cost of Failure
The DHS failed the American people. The FBI failed the people of Boston. The system failed, completely, utterly, epic face palm failure. But what people don’t realize is that the DHS and the FBI is designed to fail. The survival of the DHS depends on its failure, and just like “too big to fail”Wall Street banks the DHS will be rewarded with more money because of its failure. The whole paradigm of expecting the US government and a bunch of bureaucratic politicians to protect Americans from made up terrorists is doomed to failure, it will always fail. The system is intentionally designed to fail, its survival depends on it failing so that it can then turn around and ask more power and money from tax paying citizens.

Google Glass Porn

Sergey Brin, Google co-founder, was seen in the New York subway system wearing a prototype of the Google Glass. Google Glass is a wearable computer in the shape of a pair of glasses with a small built-in camera and microphone. As I write this, Google Glass is not yet available to consumers but Google employees and and a few select external influencers, celebrities, and other trend setters have had access to Google Glass devices.

So… by now, you have to believe that someone has already recorded some Google Glass porn. With the research and development that Google put into Google Glass, I think Google just invented a new category of porn.

Not A Kill List, But I Won’t Minding If These People Died

Unlike President Obama, I don’t have a kill list.  In fact, I don’t even believe in capital punishment.  That said I do think that there are some people that offer very little value to the embitterment of the human race. World wide, there are an estimated 7 billion people and sometimes it feels that at least least 2 billion of them are douchebags. Here is a short list of idiots, bots, clones, drones, bullies, trolls, elitist, bourgeoisie, and douchebags that I would not mind if they just drop dead from some natural cause… Or freak accident.

Did Cara Santa Maria Sleep With a Neanderthal?

I just caught the Joe Rogan Experience podcast episode with Cara Santa Maria, the science blogger at the Huffington Post. Cara Santa Maria did seem to have a weird fascination on whether homo sapiens mated with neanderthal, or neanderthals with homo sapiens… but then again she did date Bill Maher for two years so she would know.

Lessons Learned From The Petraeus Sex Scandal

There are three things to learn from the Patraeus Sex Scandal

The first lesson is that everybody is having sex with everyone else. There is nothing new about consenting adults having consenting sex with other consenting adults whether they be in the military or secret service or even in the oval office. The only thing that surprises me about the Patraeus Sex Scandal is that Bill Clinton was not involved.

The second lesson to learn here is that email or text messages or any other form of electronic communications are not private. Every message sent leaves a trail and every compromising digital picture is vulnerable of being accessed by a third party. No matter how careful you are with electronic messages, using burner cell phones, dummy email accounts, and fake names everything is logged and traceable to the source.

The final lesson is that if you have a friend in the government, from the local police to federal agent, you can have them open an investigation on anyone you don’t like. The Patraeus affair was revealed only after one of the women involved contacted a friend in the FBI to open an investigation. I’ve know folks that have filed legitimate police complaints to report theft and vandalism where the police didn’t even show up. But this scandal proves that if you have friends inside the police you get a special investigation unit on the case.

The First Native American Saint and The Falsehoods in the News Media

There are numerous reports out today that the Vatican will canonized the first-ever Native American. These reports have been reported by CNN as Pope names first Native American saint and Reuters via the Chicago Tribune as Vatican names seven saints including first Native American. The new saint referred in these erroneous articles is Saint Kateri Tekakwitha, known as Lily of the Mohawks. She lived in the late 1600s in and died at the young age of 24, during her life and times many Native Americans were ravaged by decease and war but she is not the first Native American to reach sainthood.

Saint Kateri Tekakwitha is the second Native American saint. The first Native American to be named a saint by the Vatican was Saint Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin. Saint Juan Diego was canonized by Pope Juan Paul II in 2002. Saint Juan Diego was a Mexica living during the time of the Spanish conquest of the New World in what is now modern day Mexico City. Saint Juan Diego is the first Native American saint, and Saint Kateri Takakwitha is the second Native American to be honored as such.

The false aspects in the reporting of the canonization of Saint Kateri Tekakwitha are so basic, and yet so widespread, that you have to question the basic research and journalism employed at CNN, Reuters, AFP and other news agencies that are reporting these falsehoods. If you can’t trust the news networks to report the basic facts on trivial events how can you trust them to report the truth on events that are more complicated and have a larger impact in society. Since this error is so widespread in so many reports from so many different networks it just proves that journalist, much like your basic bloggers, just cut and paste from press releases and copy edit link bait headlines.

While the New York Times, the paper of record, incorrectly reports that “Pope Benedict XVI canonized seven saints, including the first Native American” Wikipedia correctly states that Saint Kateri Tekakwitha “is the first Native American woman to be venerated in the Roman Catholic Church.”

The London 2012 Olympics of Shenanigans, Scandals, and Shame

The London 2012 Olympics Games have had more than its share of shenanigans and scandals. The London 2012 Olympic Games started off with a horrible Opening Ceremony which featured giant smoke pipes and dancing bankers in top hats and it hasn’t had many great moments since.

Olympic Pyramid of Providence

Olympic Pyramid of Profits and Providence

Voula Papachristou
Even before the Olympic Games got started, the Olympic Committee’s secret police was in full force monitoring social media of all the competing Olympians. The first Olympian to be removed from the Olympic Games was the Greek triple number Voula Papachristou for repeating a bad and tasteless joke on her twitter account. It has been reported that she also retweet posts from a controversial right wing Geek politician in addition to a tasteless and racist joke that has been translated as “With so many Africans in Greece … at least the West Nile mosquitos will eat homemade food!!!,” More telling that her joke, which I find immature for a 23 year old, is the Geek Olympic Committee’s decision to remove her from competing in the Olympics.

Twitter User Arrested
Greek Olympians where not the only ones on Twitter making tasteless jokes, a a 17 year old from Dorset, England has been arrested for tweeting offensive remarks. The tweet in question was the following, “i’m going to find you and i’m going to drown you in the pool you cocky twat your a nobody people like you make me sick.” By all measures this is an idle and harmless threat. Trash talking has been an integral part of competitions since the first olympic games but now it’s illegal.

NBC Suspends Journalists Twitter Account
Twitter was the center of another olympic size scandal when it suspended the account of Guy Adams, and independent journalist, after he had tweeted a complaint about NBC broadcast of the games. Tweet in question reads as follows, “The man responsible for NBC pretending the Olympics haven’t started yet is Gary Zenkel. Tell him what u think! Email: Gary.zenkel@nbcuni.com” As of right now, Guy Adams has under 20k followers, which means only about three emails might have been sent because of the tweet but that was enough for NBC to complain and have the account suspended. NBC retracted the complaint and the Twitter account was restored.

Olympian Booted For Spending Time with Family
St. Kitts and Nevis sprinter Kim Collins was expelled from the London 2012 Olympic Games, not for tweeting offensive remarks, but for spending time with his wife. It seems that the St. Kitts and Nevis Olympic Committee forced him out for not staying at the Olympic Village and instead staying with his wife. It is reported that Kim Collins posted the following message on his Facebook page, “Hours before my 5th 100m olympic race, i now find out i cant run,all because i was in a hotel with my wife/coach. S.K.N.O.C REALLY? Are you freakig kiddin me!!!!!!!!”

Australian Boxer Faces Sanctions
It has been widely reported that even spectators can’t wear their own clothes if they don’t have the official corporate logos of the Olympic sponsors. Well, Olympians seem to have more stringent dress code. Australian boxer Damien Hooper is in hot water with the Australian Olympic Committee for wearing a t-shirt with the Australian aboriginal flag on it prior a fight. It appears that the Australian Olympic Committee is not aware that the aboriginal flag has been appointed as an official flag of Australia.

Badminton Match Fixing
I haven’t seen any news on NBC regarding the the badminton match fixing but other news agencies are reporting that eight Olympians have been disqualified for match fixing. Chinese and South Korean teams were purposefully loosing to take advantage of loopholes in the teams are grouped and ranked.

Saddest Story of the Olympics
The gold medal for the saddest story of the London 2012 Olympic Games goes to Shin Lam of South Korea. All the South Korean fencer needed to do to move on to a gold medal match was not to be touched for one second. Unfortunately for Shin, the clock never started after the referred signaled the match to restart. Because of this error with the timekeeper, she lost the match. She remained in the playing surface to content the decision, but eventually was removed by security.

Flag for a United Middle East

Have you even wondered what a united Middle East would look like? An end to settlements and refugee camps. An end to mortar attacks and border crossings. An end to politicians pandering to the military industrial complex. What would a flag look like for a Israel-Palestine state?

Flag of Israel-Palestine Union
This flag uses the design of the flag of Israel and it adds the colors of the flag of Palestine. In addition, a red eight-sided star known as Rub el Hizb is added next to the Star of David. The eight-sided star has been used Islamic culture and it has been associated with Jerusalem.

This variation for a combined flag uses the Star and Crescent to to represent the Palestinian people, most of which are Muslim. The star and crescent is a universal symbol used by many cultures but in the 20th century it was widely adopted in a symbol in the national flags in the Middle East.

Flag of Israel-Palestine Union Stars United
To better represent the idea that the two peoples of Israel and Palestine have a lot more in common than their perspective governments would like to admit, the following variation on the design aligns and embedded the stars together.

The olive branch is an international symbol of peace so the following design incorporates two olive branches.
